Oakland Raiders History
In 1959, soon after the first AFL (American Football League) draft, the
owners of the Minneapolis team agreed to join the NFL (National Football
League) leaving an open space in the AFL’s Western Division. The city of Oakland was then chosen as the 8th AFL franchise. Oakland held a “name the team” contest in which the owners chose the suggestion of the Oakland Señors but changed it later that year to the Oakland Raiders with black, gold, and white as the team colors. After the University of California refused to allow home games at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, the team chose Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. The Oakland Raiders played their first home game on September 11, 1960 against the Houston Oilers with a losing score of 37-22. The Raiders finished their first season in the AFL with a 6-8 record.
Oakland experienced countless changes over the next few years as they moved from Kezar Stadium to Candlestick Park in 1961 and then temporarily played at the Frank Youell Field while the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum was being built. In 1963 Al Davis was hired as both head coach and general manager of the Raiders. Davis brought the team out of their losing streak along with changing the team colors to silver and black. The team improved to a 10-4 record and Al Davis was named AFL’s Coach of the Year in 1963. In 1966 the AFL began a merger with the NFL. The next year the Raiders won the AFL championship against the Houston Oilers and went on to play the Green bay Packers in Super Bowl II where they lost 33-14. The team then joined the Western Division of the American Football Conference in the NFL in 1970. In 1969 under the team’s 6th head coach, John Madden, the Raiders won their first Super Bowl against the Minnesota Vikings with a score of 32-14. The Raiders won their second Super Bowl in 1980 against the Philadelphia Eagles with a 27-10 win as a wild card team. They became the first ever wild card team to win a Super Bowl in the NFL.
After failed attempts to have the Oakland Coliseum expanded, Davis agreed to move the team to Los Angeles. He lost approval by the league owners but the team moved later in 1982 after a second jury approved. The next season the team won their third Super Bowl against the Washington Redskins. The Raiders moved back to Oakland in 1995 and won another division title in 2002, their first since 1990, under head coach Jon Gruden. They went on to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003, with Gruden as Tampa Bay’s
head coach, and lost with a 48-21 score. The team has had 4 consecutive
losing seasons since. In 2007, the team announced they have hired new head
coach Lane Kiffin, their 4th head coach since Gruden in 2002.
